Maria Magdalena Jasso Ortiz was called to be with Our Lord on Friday, July 3, 2020 at 97 years of age. She was born on April 26, 1923 to the parents of Maximillan Jasso and Manuela Baeza in Presidio, TX on the Portales Ranch. In 1937 she married Marcos Ortiz and moved to Grandfalls, TX where she and her husband raised their family. She worked for the Grandfalls-Royalty School system in the school cafeteria for over 20 years until her retirement. Her love of cooking and baking was very much appreciated by her students as well as her family. Besides cooking, Maria loved to garden and sew, leaving behind heirlooms her family will treasure forever. She was active for many years in her church serving as lecturer, Sunday school teacher, and church caretaker. She founded the Sacred Heart society at St. Gertrude’s Catholic Church and was a parishioner there for over 70 years. She was involved in the Crusillo movement attending many retreats and conferences throughout the years.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Marcos Ortiz, her parents, brothers Nuevas, Vicente, and Benito, sisters HNA. Paulina, Maria Antonia Hernandez, and Lourdes Pena. She is survived by her daughters, Rita Carrasco, Maria Jesus (Jessie) Ornelas, and Natividad Polanco, numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great, great grandchildren, as well as nieces and nephews from all of her extended family.

Services for Maria will be announced at a later date with a memorial Mass in Grandfalls, TX and burial in Crane, TX. Arrangements are under the care of Shaffer-Nichols Funeral Home of Crane.

May God Bless Mrs. Ortiz. I graduated in 1987 and still talk about Mrs. Ortiz's cooking. She made her food with love and shared it with us. -Jimmy Williams
